Type Locality and Naming

West Henan. The Bingmagou Fm was named by the Party of Regional Geological Survey, Henan Bureau of Geology in 1964. The type section is in the area north of Big-magou Village, Lüdian Township, Yichuan County, Henan Province. It is the lowermost formation in Ruyang Gr.

Synonym: (兵马沟组); Xiaogoubei Fm, a synonym for Bingmagou Fm, is suggested to be abandoned


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is composed of purple red conglomerate, sandy conglomerate, sandstone and silty shale. The sandy conglomerate and sandstone possess monoclinic-bedding and cross-bedding. The sandstone contains glauconite and iron concretions. It is thickness changes greatly. In the type locality, the formation is 880 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is unconformably overlies volcanics of the Xiong'er Gr. It is unconformably underlain by the Archean Dengfeng Gr.

Upper contact

Diconformably overlain by the basal conglomerate of the Yunmengshan Fm

Regional extent

West Henan. The formation spreads in limited area, and crops out in western segment of Songshan mountain and north area of Jiyuan City, Henan Province.
